Managing Frailty in Community Settings |
Target audience: |
Physio's in community |
Course Description: |
Frailty is a clinical state characterised by a greater level of vulnerability to adverse health outcomes as the ageing body succumbs to physiological decline in multiple organ systems. Older adults with frailty are less resilient to external stressors such as illness and injury, and physiotherapists are increasingly being tasked with assessing frail, older adults for rehabilitation. This Managing Frailty in Community Settings course is run face-to-face and is interactive. It has been designed for qualified physiotherapist who are working with older people in community settings, often where rapid assessment must be made of the person’s health status to participate in rehabilitation, or only a limited time is made available for rehabilitation intervention. The course is for physiotherapy professionals who are looking to develop and share their knowledge and understanding of frailty in the context of working with older people in the community, and the development of practical skills that will inform their therapeutic decision-making and intervention choices. This course is to update participants on expected changes in the ageing nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems. For participants to understand the impact of lifestyle choice and disease in establishing a basis for frailty and deconditioning in the older population. To enhance a physiotherapist’s skills in screening for and managing frailty in the community setting. To use practical and video demonstration to consider what might be assessed in terms of functional movement i.e. gait, balance and transfers in this frail older community-dwelling population. To open discussion about the mental health of this population, and the effect it might have in the individual’s behaviour and ability to participate in rehabilitation |
